Prototype Description:
Bethlehem’s 100 ton 3,483 cubic foot quad hoppers were first built in 1964 and have been iconic in western mountain railroading ever since. Many still are in use with the Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF on MOW trains. In fact a rather large handful can still be found sprinkled across the United States on short-lines still carrying coal and coke among other commodities today. Some of the features that the 3483s had that made them easy to spot is their relatively short height of only 11’7″ compared to their later counterparts pushing heights of 12’8″.
